The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has described the demise of the late Rt Hon Ferdinand Ekok Nzie Okpokam as sad, adding that the late legislator contributed immensely to the development of the State.
The Speaker, who made the statement during the valedictory session held in Honour of Rt. Hon. Okpokam at the chambers of the Assembly, Friday, lamented that about four former legislators have died within 2024 and reiterated his commitment to ensuring that former legislators are paid stipends to help them take care of their health needs.
Ayambem eulogised late Okpokam describing him as; “a peaceful and dedicated legislator who served his constituents meritoriously”.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and for God’s grace upon his family.
In his comments, the Member representing Bekwara State Constituency, Hon. Omang Omang praised the qualities of the late Okpokam whom he said helped shape Cross River State.
Former Lawmakers including, Rt. Hon.Fred Osim (Ikom I), Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Idaka (Abi), Rt. Hon. Mark obi (Boki II), Rt. Hon. M Olom (Yala II) Rt. Hon. Itam Abang (Boki I) amongst others all extoled the qualities of their late colleague describing him as dependable, credible, deliberate and peace loving. They admonished his wife and children to put their trust in God who will comfort and help them.
According to a statement read by the Clerk of the Assembly, Barr Catherine Ubi, late Rt. Hon. Okpokam represented Ikom I State Constituency between 1999 and 2007.
“He was a vocal and an experienced Legislator whose sonorous voice was always heard on this floor especially on issues concerning the well-being of the people he represented. During his first Term in 1999, he was carefully selected as Chairman, House Committee on Public Petitions and Human Rights, a position he handled creditably and in 2003, after he was re-elected, he became Chairman, House Committee on Business and Rules. He also served in several other Commitees as Member.”
The late Rt. Hon.Ferdinand Ekok Nzie Ferdinand Okpokam will be buried in his hometown, Okangha Mkpansi on Saturday 21st December 2024.
