Democracy Day: Rights, Progress and Challenges

Today, Nigeria proudly observes Democracy Day, a hugely significant date commemorating the annulled 1993 presidential election won by Chief Moshood Abiola. Officially designated a national holiday in 2019 by President Muhammadu Buhari, this pivotal day serves as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s ongoing journey towards robust democracy and the high hopes citizens place in their elected officials. It is a day when we collectively reflect on the enduring struggle for democratic governance and honor the profound sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who tirelessly championed the right to choose their leaders.
As members of the Fourth Estate, we take immense pride in the pivotal role we have played in shaping the narrative of our democracy, frequently amidst considerable adversity. We acknowledge the substantial progress achieved in embedding democratic governance within our society, including several peaceful transitions of power and the continued maturation of our democratic institutions. However, this commemoration isn’t just about remembering the past; it’s a powerful affirmation of our commitment to a future where democratic principles truly flourish. We must also confront the persistent challenges that impede our collective progress, including pervasive corruption, escalating insecurity, and deep-seated socio-economic disparities.
On this solemn yet celebratory day, we pay heartfelt tribute to the brave souls who endured immense suffering, imprisonment, and even made the ultimate sacrifice in their pursuit of freedom and democracy. Their unwavering courage, resilience, and unyielding spirit laid the foundation for the democratic freedoms and principles we cherish today. We remember those who spoke truth to power, those who organized for change, and those who stood firm against oppression, knowing that their sacrifices paved the way for the Nigeria we know.
While Nigeria has undoubtedly made significant strides on its democratic journey, we acknowledge that the path ahead requires continued dedication and vigilance. Our collective mission is to further consolidate our democracy, ensuring it genuinely serves the needs and aspirations of all Nigerians. This necessitates an unwavering commitment to advocating for and meticulously protecting fundamental human rights, including the critical freedoms of speech, assembly, and association. A truly democratic society is one where every voice can be heard, where diverse opinions are respected, and where citizens can gather freely to discuss and shape their shared future.
It is imperative that several key issues are addressed with urgency, not least among them the critical matter of press freedom. We unequivocally call upon the government to uphold and safeguard press freedom, ensuring that journalists can execute their professional duties without fear of reprisal or intimidation. Furthermore, the bedrock of any vibrant democracy rests upon robust and transparent institutions. It is therefore imperative that we commit to reinforcing these vital pillars of our governance. This means ensuring that institutions operate with complete independence and impartiality, free from undue influence, and are held fully accountable to the people they serve. Strong, independent institutions are essential for upholding the rule of law, ensuring fairness, and building public trust.
We also wish to underscore the crucial necessity of implementing sustainable economic policies and programmes that genuinely benefit all Nigerians, with a view to alleviating poverty and mitigating inequality across the nation.
As we observe Democracy Day, we earnestly encourage all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to engage in a profound reflection on both our achievements and the formidable obstacles that lie ahead. This day serves as a powerful call to action: let us unite in our efforts to construct a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous society – a society where democratic principles are sacrosanct, the rights of every individual are diligently protected, and our collective future is one of resilience and justice. Let us join hands, irrespective of our backgrounds, to foster a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient democracy that truly represents the rich diversity of our citizens, actively addresses their needs, and empowers every Nigerian to participate in building a prosperous and just society.

Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria!
