Gov Otu’s Asset Recovery Drive Gains Public Support as Crackdown Begins

Department of Asset Management and Recovery, led by Barr. Gilbert Agbor leading to recovery sites

Governor Bassey Otu’s directive to reclaim government-owned assets has been met with widespread approval from Cross River residents, as the Department of Asset Management and Recovery, led by Barr. Gilbert Agbor, swiftly executes its mandate. The ongoing crackdown on illegal occupation and encroachment of state property is reinforcing the administration’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsible governance.

One of the most notable discoveries in the asset recovery operation took place at Government College, Ikot Ansa, where it was found that portions of the school’s land had been illegally sold and developed.

During the visit, the school’s principal, Chief Ofem Ubana, revealed that he discovered the issue upon assuming office in 2023.

“When I arrived, I noticed ongoing construction on a portion of land belonging to the school, but I had no knowledge of how it was acquired. I promptly reported the situation to the relevant authorities. As a principal, my duty is to run the school, not to engage in land transactions,” he stated.

Further investigations uncovered that individuals within the Ikot Ansa community had allegedly facilitated the sale of sections of the school’s property to private entities, including former top government officials and their associates.

A concerned resident, Emmanuel Etim, condemned the act, calling for urgent government intervention.

“It is shocking that people can go as far as selling school property. Even the principal’s quarters and the corps members’ lodge have been leased out. This level of impunity must not be tolerated.”

Another resident praised Governor Otu’s intervention:

“We are grateful that the Governor has taken this issue seriously. This land rightfully belongs to the school, and we trust the government will ensure it is fully reclaimed. God bless the Sweet Prince for his leadership.”

The recovery team also visited 12 IBB Road, where government-owned property was reportedly being unlawfully occupied by private individuals.

Speaking at the site, the Special Adviser on Asset Management and Recovery, Barr. Gilbert Agbor, reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to retrieve all state-owned assets and restore order.

Residents welcomed the move, with Effiom Orok commending the government’s efforts.

“It is refreshing to see the government take decisive action. These properties belong to the state and should serve public interests, not private gains. I urge the department to continue its work with diligence.”

Governor Otu’s bold asset recovery initiative signals a renewed era of accountability and proper resource management in Cross River State. By reclaiming illegally acquired government properties, the administration is reinforcing the principle that public assets must be used for the benefit of all.

As the Department of Asset Management and Recovery intensifies its operations, residents remain hopeful that these efforts will deter further abuse of state resources and ensure that public property serves its intended purpose.
