The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, on Monday officially flagged off the Ogoja Carnival 2025, reaffirming the commitment of Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s administration to promoting culture and tourism as key drivers of economic expansion in the state.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Ogoja Council Secretariat, Odey, who represented Governor Bassey Otu, described the carnival, themed “Traces of Time,” as a vital platform for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Cross River North Senatorial District and unlocking economic opportunities for the people.

He emphasised that the carnival aligns with the Otu-led administration’s commitment to promoting tourism and preserving cultural identity, noting that Governor Otu remains resolute in deploying culture and tourism as catalysts for sustainable development.

Rt. Hon. Odey commended the organisers for sustaining the carnival over the years and urged residents to actively participate and maintain peace throughout the festivities. He also assured them of the state government’s continued support for initiatives that promote grassroots development and cultural sustainability.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Governing Council, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, applauded the state government for its unwavering support for cultural events, noting that such initiatives strengthen social cohesion and drive economic growth.

The colourful event featured parades by competing bands from Obudu, Bekwarra, Ogoja, Yala, and Obanliku Local Government Areas, as well as performances by non-competing bands.
