Cross River Central Senatorial District And The Rain of Fake Alerts

Opinion • 1/10/2026

By Hope Obeten

Sen. Eteng Jones Williams.

It is difficult not to laugh-out-loud at the spectacle that recently unfolded across Cross River Central Senatorial District, where enthusiastic youths gathered in anticipation of genuine empowerment, only to be met with a barrage of audio promises and fake alerts. A select few, conveniently imported from the Southern Senatorial District, took to social media to announce the so-called disbursement of hundreds of millions of naira. Yet, the reality on ground tells a very different story.

In communities such as Okundi, Ikom, Itigidi, and others, many youths were left stranded, some unable to afford transport back home. What was advertised as empowerment turned out to be mere tokenism noise without substance, promises without proof.

Ideally, the months and years preceding an election should be defined by robust intellectual engagement: debates, scrutiny of candidates’ track records, capacity, vision, and programmes for governance. Unfortunately, these critical democratic exercises are being drowned out by shallow theatrics, token handouts, and what can best be described as “audio alerts.”

No falsehood, packaged as progressiveness or paraded under “Governor-say” politics, can stand the test of time. Cross River Central Senatorial District is blessed with a compassionate, honest, and people-centred leader, one who does not need to be a moneybag to command respect or deliver results. Only political neophytes with retrogressive and juvenile thinking would wish otherwise for the district. God, indeed, is not a wicked God.

The benefits of Senator Eteng Jonah Williams’ return for a second term are both clear and compelling. Discerning minds can already imagine the expanded scope of influence, legislative experience, and strategic positioning he would deploy to attract even greater dividends of democracy to Cross River Central Senatorial District.

Certainly, every political landscape has its share of inexperienced and delusional actors, individuals whose sentiments are driven purely by personal interests rather than the collective good. In their desperation for relevance, they spare no effort in attempting to discredit and diminish the genuine contributions of men of integrity.

Yet, the people of Cross River Central Senatorial District are not fools. They can read between the lines. In their judgment, they continue to appreciate the calm, focused, humane, and effective leadership of Senator Eteng Jonah Williams.

We shall not be distracted by noise makers. We remain steadfast, focused, and committed to the mandate to DO MORE.
