Rebuttal : Hon Etaba Not Having Affair With A Married Woman, Politics Taken Too Far
News • 5/11/2026

Politics should not be reduced to the easy currency of character assassination, viral outrage, and unverified narratives. Yet again, we are confronted with a situation where a public official is being drawn into controversy based on a circulating video that lacks clear context but carries heavy implications.
The video in question features Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, Member representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, alongside a woman dressed in red, while an unidentified voice in the background makes allegations suggesting wife snatching. The framing and commentary attached to the video have triggered public reactions — but reactions, however strong, are not a substitute for facts.
According to Hon. Etaba, the woman in question is someone from the same community with him-Appiapom in Obubra Local Government Area, whom he and his wife have been supporting over time due to the difficult and toxic marital situation that has since broken down. In his account, what is being misrepresented as impropriety is, in fact, a history of personal and family-level intervention in a distressed situation between the woman and the husband.
This distinction highlights a recurring challenge in today’s information environment, context collapse. A single clip, stripped of background and amplified without verification, can quickly evolve into a damaging narrative that travels faster than the truth can catch up. That is where the real concern lies.
The question to ask right now is — why now, with elections around the corner? Why should the accuser choose to remain behind the camera, faceless? And if there was really an affair, would the wife not be involved to the extent of creating trouble at home?. These are questions that demand answers before anyone is crucified on the altar of moral judgment or selective outrage.
Public accountability is essential, and no public office holder should be exempt from scrutiny. However, scrutiny must be anchored in verification, not assumption; in investigation, not insinuation. When allegations involving personal integrity are circulated without due diligence, the line between truth and speculation becomes dangerously blurred.
What is needed in moments like this is not rush to judgment, but discipline — particularly from those who report, comment, and amplify. The responsibility of social media media and civic voices is not only to inform, but to ensure that what is being amplified is accurate, contextual, and fair.
Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba’s public record and service history, like that of any elected official, remains open to scrutiny. But scrutiny must be conducted in a way that strengthens democratic discourse rather than corrodes it through misinformation and politically timed narratives.
Ultimately, the issue is larger than any individual. It speaks to the health of our public space — and whether we choose to prioritize evidence over emotion, or virality over truth, time will tell. Rt Hon Mike Etaba is innocent.
